Norbert Sykes is a Vietnam veteran from a small Wisconsin town. Childhood abuse at the hands of his stepfather, plus a nightmarish career as a Special Forces tunnel rat and POW in Vietnam, left Norbert with an unstable multiple personality disorder, occasionally lapsing into catatonia. One of Norbert's personalities is a vigilante who calls himself Badger. Badger travels hither and yon, enforcing his sincere though somewhat skewed perspective through devastating martial arts prowess, the ability to communicate with animals, and the help of many unusual friends, both real and imagined.
BADGER is the creation of Mike Baron, who usually writes the character as a sort of cross between Yojimbo and Zippy the Pinhead.
During the intervals when it is published, I collect BADGER obsessively. It is the only comic book that I buy monthly. (I follow Preacher and Cerebus via compilations. Bob Burden doesn't release Flaming Carrot regularly enough to buy it monthly, semi-monthly, quasi-monthly, or otherwise.)
As proof positive of my obsessive-compulsive nature, I am slowly compiling a cross-reference of BADGER characters. To that end, I have sparse notes on the original Capital Comics issues of 1983 and 1984; all the issues published by First Comics in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991, both regular and special series; the two mini-series published by Dark Horse Comics in 1994; and the most recent series, resurrected briefly under the Image label. In addition, I have itemized all the Badger crossovers that I know.
